A round-up of performances from the past week including area road relays action, Jo Pavey winning the Worcester City 10km and Katarina Johnson-Thompson at Decastar

The World Mountain Running Championships took place in Wales over the weekend and a report for that can be found here. Elsewhere, athletes were in area road relays action across England, while Jo Pavey won the Worcester City 10km and Katarina Johnson-Thompson struggled with injury at Decastar.

Road

North of England Relays, Blackpool, September 19

Derby won the men’s six-stage by 41 seconds in 2:01:24. Liverpool’s Daniel Cliffe was fastest with a time of 19:28.

Lincoln Wellington were clear winners of the women’s race in 73:18. Kendal’s Rebecca Robinson was the fastest with a time of 17:06.

Midland Road Relays, Sutton Coldfield, September 19

Notts AC won the men’s race by almost two minutes. Tipton’s Ryan McLeod ran the fastest leg.

Leicester easily won the masters race.

Birchfield Harriers were clear women’s winner from Bristol and West. Charnwood’s Gemma Hillier-Moses ran the fastest time with 14:42.

South Of England Relays, Aldershot, September 19/20

Highgate won the men’s race by over a minute in 1:50:14. Phil Wicks of runners-up Belgrave ran the fastest leg of 17:45.

Kent AC won the Masters M40 race by two minutes in 1:20:20 while Herne Hill Harriers were equally dominant in the M50s race.

Cambridge and Coleridge were surprise winners of the women’s race, taking their first ever senior women’s title in 53:51. Amy Clements ran the fastest women’s time of 12:54.

Winchester won the Veterans race in 57:56 with their Lucy Elliott breaking the masters lap record with a time of 13:10.

Worcester City 10km, September 20

European 10,000m champion Jo Pavey celebrated her birthday with a clear women’s race win in 33:11, 20 seconds ahead of Kenyan Hilda Cheboi.

Victor Boit won the men’s race easily in 28:41.

World masters 800m and 1500m champion Anthony Whiteman was first veteran in 32:30.

English Half Marathon, Warrington, September 20

Dan Cliffe won the men’s race in 67:44 the day after running the fastest leg at the North of England Relays, while Felicity Milton won the women’s race in 81:06.

Admiral Swansea Bay 10km, September 20

Morris Munene Gachaga won the men’s race in 28:32. Wales’ Dewi Griffiths was third and first Briton in 29:20.

Teresiah Omosa was first woman in 33:47, while Kate Reed was first Briton in third in 34:10.

Dam to Damloop, Amsterdam, Netherlands, September 20

Edwin Kiptoo won the men’s 10 mile race in a world-leading 45:19.

Joyce Chepkirui also set a world-leading mark in the women’s race, winning in 51:30.

Track and field

Decastar, Talence, September 19-20

Hungarian Gyorgyi Zsivoczky-Farkas won the heptathlon with a score of 6306 points after being just fifth overnight.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson led overnight with 3851 points after a 13.46 hurdles, 1.87m high jump, 12.07m shot and 23.17 in the 200m.

However, injury kept her to just a 6.17 long jump and 29.15m in the javelin and she didn’t compete in the 800m.

Johnson-Thompson, who had been aiming for the Rio Olympics qualifying standard of 6200 points but sustained a torn adductor muscle, later tweeted: “Not to be for me in Talence, thoroughly enjoyed competing here. The crowd & atmosphere was great throughout. Season DONE.”

South Africa s Willem Coertzen won the decathlon with 8187 points.

The event was also the last in this season’s IAAF Combined Events Challenge and Russia s Ilya Shkurenev won the decathlon title after finishing third in Talence. Latvia s Laura Ikauniece-Admidina won the heptathlon title despite not competing in France after Nadine Broersen, who had been the only one to challenge her for the overall title, withdrew during the competition.

English Schools Combined Events and Race Walking Championships, Bedford September 19-20

Pippa Earley of Kingston & Poly won the pentathlon with 3462 points. The 15-year-old clocked 10.86 in the 75m hurdles, missing the UK best by just 0.01.

European Champion Clubs Cup Juniors, Group A, Istanbul, September 19

Shaftesbury Barnet finished third in the men’s event and Blackheath and Bromley were third in the women’s event.

Shaftesbury won the 100m through Gerald Matthew and European junior 800m champion Kyle Langford won the 1500m and they also won both relays.

For Blackheath there were wins for Vivien Olatunji at 100m, Cheriece Hylton at 200m and 400m, Jessica Keene at 3000m and the 4x100m relay team.

Spain’s Playa de Castellon won the men’s event and Fenerbahce of Turkey won the women’s event.

Ultra running

Self-Transcendence 24-Hour Race, Battersea Park, September 19

Beth Pascall won the overall 24 hour race with a distance of 142.97 miles.

Another woman Ali Young (135.24 miles) was second and Simon Smith (131.10 miles) was leading man.
