A look ahead to the Herculis Diamond League meeting in Monaco

Two years on from his unexpected European 1500m record at the same venue, Mo Farah is back in Monaco to compete at the same distance.

The double Olympic, world and European champion is in action at the Herculis Diamond League meeting on Friday (July 17) following his 5000m victory in Lausanne a week ago.

Farah clocked 3:28.81 when in Monaco in 2013, a time which broke a 16-year-old European record and puts him seventh on the world all-time list. On that occasion he finished behind Asbel Kiprop with 3:27.72 a time that remains the two-time world champion’s PB and puts him at fifth on the world all-time list – and the Kenyan is also again in action in Monaco.

You can read an AW report of Farah’s record-breaking run, which also beat Steve Cram’s 28-year-old British record, here.

Olympic champion Taoufik Makhloufi, who has shown a return to form recently, and sub-3:30 men Nick Willis and Abdelaati Iguider are also set to be among those competing.

The women’s 1500m features another Brit, Laura Muir, who is in the form of her life and poised to go sub-four for the first time. She faces Genzebe Dibaba, Jenny Simpson, Sifan Hassan and fellow Brit Laura Weightman.

Christian Taylor and Pedro Pablo Pichardo are set for another exciting head-to-head in the men’s triple jump as they both chase more 18-metre marks, while British athletes Nathan Douglas and Julian Reid also form part of the field. Brits Shara Proctor and Lorraine Ugen go against world No.1 Tianna Bartoletta in the long jump with a UK record, as ever, on the cards.

World No.1 Justin Gatlin goes in the 100m and faces the likes of European record-holder Jimmy Vicaut, Tyson Gay and Britain’s sub 10-second man Chijindu Ujah. World champ Mohammed Aman and Nijel Amos are among those contesting the 800m, while the 3000m is set to see Caleb Ndiku, who fell in the Lausanne 5000m, back in action.

The women s 100m hurdles has a great line-up including Britain’s Tiffany Porter, while other British athletes in action are Isobel Pooley in the high jump, Christine Ohuruogu in the 400m and Dina Asher-Smith in the 200m, which also features European 100m and 200m champion Dafne Schippers.

Julius Yego and Keshorn Walcott, the two men over 90 metres this year, headline the javelin, while world pole vault record-holder Renaud Lavillenie is back on the runway.

In the steeplechase, American Emma Coburn will be hoping to avenge her defeat in Lausanne to Ethiopia’s Hiwot Ayalew and Kenya’s Virginia Nyambura.
