Bidding seminar held for 2020 European Championships and 2019 European Indoors

A bidding seminar has taken place in Lausanne for the 2020 European Championships and 2019 European Indoor Championships.

Member Federations from seven different countries, including Great Britain & Northern Ireland, attended the seminar on Monday which outlined the requirements for hosting European Athletics’ flagship indoor and outdoor events.

Britain and Poland have both declared an interest in hosting either the 2020 outdoor championships or the 2019 indoors. Britain’s hope of hosting the 2019 event was already known, with Glasgow the proposed host city, while 2020 could see top-class athletics again return to London’s Olympic Stadium.

France and Georgia have expressed interest in hosting the 2020 meeting, while Belarus, Bulgaria and Netherlands have shown interest in hosting the 2019 European Indoors.

“It’s promising to have several potential bidders for our main events,” commented European Athletics president Svein Arne Hansen, who chaired the bidding seminar. Hansen was accompanied by the newly-formed Evaluation Commission comprising Luciano Barra, John Lister, Karel Pilny and Pierre Weiss, which forms part of the new structure decided by the executive board.

“European Athletics has developed a comprehensive bidding process with a well-structured and transparent procedure which provides clear timelines and tools to help organise these events,” added Hansen, with Monday’s seminar the biggest-ever event bidding seminar to have been held by European Athletics.

The 2016 European Championships will be held in Amsterdam and the 2018 championships in Berlin. The 2017 European Indoor Championships are to be held in Belgrade.
