European champion due to race the second edition of the Steve Cram-organised event in September

Jo Pavey has confirmed her intention to run the Worcester City 10K on September 20.

The 41-year-old, who won European 10,000m gold in Zurich last summer just 10 days after she claimed 5000m bronze at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, is enjoying mixing road racing with track action this year. She recently announced how she does not intend to target this summer s IAAF World Championships in Beijing but will instead focus on working towards what would be her fifth Olympic Games in Rio in 2016.

“I’m really looking forward to joining everyone in Worcester on 20 September,” said Pavey. “I have spoken to a few people about the event and everyone has said that last year’s race was a great occasion that attracted fantastic support.

“The route looks lovely and will certainly show off some of the best sights in a beautiful city. If the people of Worcester come out to cheer on the athletes like I’m told they did in 2014, then it should be a very enjoyable run for everyone.”

The event, which was held for the first time last year, is organised by Steve Cram. The 2014 race was won by local athlete Jenny Nesbitt, with Paula Radcliffe – who was returning to road race action ahead of making her marathon farewell in London – finishing third.

Looking ahead to this year’s event, Cram commented: “Jo is a genuine inspiration on so many levels. She is still competing at the very top level in her 40s, which is fantastic, and she does so with a wonderful attitude.

“Her story has really struck a chord with the British public and demonstrates to women and men that age doesn t have to be a barrier to great running performances.

“Once again, Jo is running really well this year and although the Worcester City 10K isn’t her main target for the season, we still expect her to be at the sharp end of the field on 20 September!”

The Worcester City 10K will be held along with a Run-Bike-Run event and young athletes run on September 20. Entry to the 10km costs 25 for unaffiliated runners and 23 for affiliated, while places on the young athletes run cost 8.
