A look at some of the top performances after another busy week of athletics action

It was a busy weekend with major action in Gotzis, Eugene, Bedford and Manchester but there was plenty else of note, too.

Road

Edinburgh Marathon, May 31

In very windy conditions, there were wins for Kenyans Peter Wanjiru (2:19:34) and Joan Kigen (2:39:43).

UAE Healthy Kidney 10km, New York, May 30

Ben True became the first American winner since Dathan Ritzenhein in 2007 with a time of 28:13, just edging out defending champion Stephen Sambu of Kenya who shared the winning time while 2013 New York City Marathon champion Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya finished third in 28:20.

Gemma Steel finished third woman in 33:47 as Joyce Chepkirui just edged Gladys Cherono as both ran 32:33.

Bristol 10km, May 31

Jonah Chesum won the men’s race in 29:18 with Nick Torry the leading Briton in third in 30:03. Louise Damen won the women’s race in 33:39.

IAU World Ultra Trail Championships, Annecy, France, May 30

France’s Sylvain Court (8:15:38) and Nathalie Mauclair (9:30:59) won the individual titles. Tom Owens was Britain’s top placed runner in fourth and he led the GB men to team bronze medals. Sarah Morwood was the first British female in 26th and the GB women’s team finished sixth.

Atletissima, Namur, Belgium, May 27

When winning the 400m, Laviai Nielsen (pictured) ran the world’s leading time for an under-20 with 52.25. That mark puts her third on the UK junior all-time list behind only Donna Hartley and Linsey Macdonald.

Meghan Beesley won the 400m hurdles in 55.80.

IPC Athletics Grand Prix, Nottwil, Switzerland, May 29-31

A total of nine world records were broken in Nottwil. Dutch sprinter Marlou van Rhijn broke her own T43 100m and 200m world records with respective times of 12.82 and 25.66. Canada’s Becky Richter broke the 25-year-old T51 100m world record with 31.66. Australia’s Angela Ballard broke the T53 400m world record with 54.73 .

Britain’s Toby Gold was among the athletes to break a European record as he clocked 32.66 in the T33 200m to better his own mark. Finland’s Henry Manni broke four European records over T34 200m, 400m, 800m and 5000m.

Hannah Cockroft continued her dominance to win all of the four T34 events she contested – 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m.

European Clubs Cup, Mersin, Turkey, May 30-31

British teams struggled with City of Manchester seventh in the men’s event with 65 points. It was close up front with Spain’s Playas de Castellon winning with 117 points from Turkey’s Enka and Italy’s Fiamme Gialle both on 115.

Another Spanish club, Valencia Terra i Mar, easily won the women’s event with 120 points from Turkey’s Fenerbahce on 97. Edinburgh were seventh on 48 points.

Russian Team Championships, Sochi, May 29

There was a world-leading 800m for Anastasiya Bazdyreva of 1:58.75.

Havana, May 26-28

Pedro Pablo Pichardo consolidated his third place on the world all-time triple jump rankings. His Cuban record of 18.08m/0.0 in the second round has only ever been bettered by Jonathan Edwards and Kenny Harrison.
