A round-up of British Milers’ Club Grand Prix action in Manchester

An impressive 23 athletes ran a total of 24 qualification times for major championships this summer at the second British Milers’ Club Grand Prix meeting at Sportcity, Manchester, on Saturday, reports Kevin Fahey.

On a night when a grand total of 187 personal bests were recorded in 31 races, six athletes achieved qualifying marks for the European Under-23s, 13 for the European Under-20s and five for the World Youth Championships.

Carys McAulay was the runner who claimed two qualifications as the 17-year-old Warrington athlete clocked an 800m PB of 2:05.50 which beat the Euro Juniors target of 2:06.00 plus the World Youths standard of 2:08.00.

It was another junior athlete who shone in the women’s 1500m race with 18-year-old Bobby Clay scorching to first place in a PB of 4:12.20 to go fourth in this summer’s UK rankings and eighth on the UK under-20 all-time list. It is also the quickest time run in the UK this summer so far.

In the senior races there were wins for Dale Clutterbuck in the 800m and a fantastic victory for Katie Snowden in the women s race as she edged out New Zealand international Angie Petty to win in a PB of 2:01.77 to go sixth in the UK rankings.

Cameron Boyek claimed a magnificent win in the 1500m with the 21-year-old, who is coached by AW performance editor David Lowes, recording a PB of 3:40.62 to go sixth on the UK rankings.
