Olympic heptathlon champion to return to London’s former Olympic Stadium in July

Jessica Ennis-Hill is set to continue her comeback by competing at the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games in July.

The Olympic heptathlon champion is yet to confirm which event or events she’ll be contesting at the two-day IAAF Diamond League meeting taking place at the former Olympic Stadium in London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on July 24-25. The Sainsbury’s IPC Athletics Grand Prix Final will follow on the Sunday.

Ennis-Hill returns to competitive action this year after taking time out to have her first child, Reggie, who was born in July last year. The 29-year-old has also confirmed her plans to make her heptathlon return at the Hypo Meeting in Gotzis on May 30-31 as well as contest the 100m hurdles at the Great CityGames Manchester on May 9.

“I am really looking forward to the Sainsbury s Anniversary Games in the Olympic Stadium,” commented Ennis-Hill. “My race schedule is starting to take shape and it will be good to compete and get a sense of where I am in my return to competing. My main goal this season is to be as competitive as possible with the long term goal being the Rio Olympics.

“Diamond League meetings always have the best athletes in the world so I m sure this will be a good test for me. I want to perform well being back on the big stage in London but I will be realistic as 2015 is about the challenge of getting back to competitive shape after having my little boy and ultimately making the necessary progression to be at my best for Rio.”

British Athletics has secured the right to host athletics events in the former Olympic Stadium for one month every year for the next 50 years from 2016 and Ennis-Hill is looking forward to returning to the scene of her 2012 success.

“The 2012 Olympics were an incredible experience for me and it will be very special to step out on that track again,” she said.

“It will be amazing to compete in front of all our British fans who I am sure will have their own memories of the London Games too.”
