Conrad Williams named as GB captain for Glasgow International MatchPublished by
Great Britain to take on teams from Scotland, France and Germany at the Emirates Arena on SaturdayConrad Williams says he is “chuffed” to be leading the Great Britain & Northern Ireland at the Sainsbury’s Glasgow International Match on Saturday. The world, European and Commonwealth relay medallist will be joined by the likes of world indoor 60m champion Richard Kilty as GB athletes compete against teams from Scotland, France and Germany at the Emirates Arena. “It’s a real honour to captain the GB & NI team for the Sainsbury’s Glasgow International Match,” said Williams, who in Glasgow will contest an indoor individual 400m for the first time in three years. “I was surprised but delighted when Stephen Maguire asked me. It has been a goal of mine to captain a team. “I love representing my country and it doesn t get much better than being made captain. I m so chuffed and I m looking forward to leading the team and performing well on the track in Glasgow in both the 400m and 4x400m.” Lining up in the 60m, Kilty will compete indoors for the first time since he won his world title in a personal best time of 6.49 in Poland last year. He said: “This is my first race back as world champion and I m really excited to get back to Great Britain and perform. “I m pretty nervous to get out there, I haven t competed for about four months. I m sure the crowd will get behind me so I can run a pretty quick time and put in a good performance.” Meanwhile, world junior 110m hurdles bronze medallist David Omoregie will compete in the 60m hurdles as one of six GB senior debutants and is set to face the likes of France’s world indoor silver medallist Pascal Martinot Lagarde. Neil Black, British Athletics’ performance director, said: “Coming at the start of the indoor season, the Sainsbury s Glasgow International Match is important for hitting the ground running and getting the year off to a good start. “It s great to see six new faces in the GB & NI team and with three of them being teenagers it shows that we have some excellent young talent coming through.” Jess Judd, Kelly Massey, Luke Cutts and Chris Tomlinson are among the other athletes on the GB team. Having been televised by the BBC in the past, this time the event is not due to be shown on TV. The January 29 edition of Athletics Weekly will include reports, pictures and results from the match.
