Morgan Lake and Jade Jones on Young SPOTY shortlistPublished by
Heptathlete and wheelchair racer among 10 contenders for the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year awardMorgan Lake and Jade Jones have been included on the shortlist for the 2014 BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award. This follows the news that European champion Jo Pavey is among the 10 contenders for the main BBC Sports Personality of the Year honour. The Young Sports Personality award also features a shortlist of 10 sportspeople, with gymnast Claudia Fragapane and golfer Bradley Neil also among those included. Lake, who recently received one of the IAAF’s rising star awards along with France’s Wilhem Belocian at the World Athletics Gala in Monaco, won double world junior gold earlier this year. The 17-year-old, pictured above in Monaco, won both the heptathlon and the high jump in Eugene, setting a world youth best of 6148 points in the former, and also a national junior record of 1.94m in the latter this year. Jones, pictured below, right, has had another successful year in 2014, the 18-year-old having claimed T54 800m silver and 5000m bronze at the IPC European Championships in Swansea as well as Commonwealth 1500m bronze in Glasgow. Paralympian Hannah Cockroft was among those on the Young Sports Personality panel, with the winner to be announced on December 14. Sprinters Harry Aikines-Aryeetey and Amy Spencer are among the athletes to have claimed the Young Sports Personality of the Year honour in the past, with Spencer having claimed the inaugural award in 2001.
