The European 200m champion clocked 6.59 for 60m on his comeback after injury to beat James Dasaolu at the Welsh Open Indoor Championships in Cardiff

Adam Gemili had a winning return to action as he clocked a 6.59 60m PB to beat James Dasaolu at the Welsh Open Indoor Championships in Cardiff on Sunday.

The European 200m champion had not competed since last June following the hamstring injury he sustained at the Birmingham Grand Prix and the event in Wales was his first indoor competition since 2012.

The 22-year-old first equalled his 60m PB of 6.68 in the heats before running 6.59 in the final ahead of Dasaolu’s 6.64. European 100m champ Dasaolu had earlier run 6.62 in the first round. Theo Campbell was third in the final with 6.77.

“Felt great to be back running today at the @WelshAthletics champs,” Gemili wrote on Twitter. “Massive thanks to everyone there for their hospitality and friendliness.”

Speaking ahead of the event, Gemili had described missing the majority of 2015 through injury as “almost a blessing in disguise”.

“I was obviously gutted to be unable to race and go out to compete however it gave me a great opportunity to see the sport in a different way which I ve been unable to do previously,” he told AW.

“I learnt new things about the way my body works and how to get the best out of it.”

Asha Philip won the women’s 60m event, clocking a Welsh all-comers record of 7.27 in her heat which she bettered to 7.21 in the final to finish ahead of Amy Foster with 7.39 and Hannah Brier with 7.39. Brier had earlier clocked a Welsh under-20 record 7.37 to win her heat.

David King won the 60m hurdles from David Omoregie – 7.68 PB to 7.76.

Gareth Winter won the shot put with 17.36m ahead of discus specialist Brett Morse with 15.53m and Paralympic F42 discus champion Aled Davies with 14.05m.

“14.05m with the 7.26k, to take my first ever senior able bodied medal,” wrote Davies on Twitter. “Exciting year ahead.”

Chris Baker won the men’s high jump with a clearance of 2.26m, while 18-year-old Rory Dwyer cleared an indoor PB of 2.14m in second.

Combined eventer Lauren Evans won the women’s high jump, the 15-year-old clearing 1.67m.

Elsewhere, British 100m and 200m record-holder Dina Asher-Smith opened her season by running 7.20 and 7.22 for 60m at the London Indoor Games at Lee Valley, while Sean Safo-Antwi clocked a PB of 6.57 in the men’s event.
