CAS dismisses Asli Cakir Alptekin appeal against eight-year doping ban

The Turkish 1500m runner had her ban temporarily lifted pending the Court of Arbitration for Sport decision

Asli Cakir Alptekin has had her appeal against her eight-year doping ban dismissed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The Turkish 1500m runner, who won 1500m gold at London 2012 before being stripped of the title last year after abnormalities were detected in her biological passport, had been looking to have her suspension reduced on the basis of providing assistance to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

Alptekin had her ban temporarily lifted between June 23 and July 5 following an appeal from the athlete to CAS requesting that her period of ineligibility be suspended pending the resolution of the case.

But CAS has since confirmed that the appeal filed by Alptekin against WADA has been dismissed.

“The final decision is that her appeal is dismissed,” commented a CAS spokesperson. “Therefore, the temporary lifting of the ban is no longer in effect, her period of ineligibility remains in force and there is no change to her status as a suspended athlete.”

Alptekin’s eight-year period of ineligibility was backdated to include the provisional suspension that she had served since January 10, 2013, with her ban set to end at midnight on January 9, 2021.

Alptekin had already served a two-year doping ban after testing positive at the IAAF World Junior Championships in 2004.

CAS is yet to release its full decision ruling.
