A round-up of recent athletics news and results, including ratification by the IAAF of three world under-20 records

Omoregie’s world U20 60m hurdles record ratified

The IAAF has ratified three world records, including David Omoregie’s world under-20 60m hurdles mark of 7.50 which equals the record time run by Konstadinos Douvalidis in 2006. Omoregie ran that mark in 2014 but ratification of the record was delayed by a number of factors, the main one being that his performance was achieved on the same day that Wilhem Belocian ran 7.48 in Val de Reuil and therefore was not submitted for ratification until it was confirmed that Belocian s performance did not meet the ratification requirements.

Konrad Bukowiecki’s throw of 22.48m with the 6kg shot put has also been ratified as an under-20 indoor record, while Eliza McCartney’s world under-20 pole vault record of 4.64m has also been ratified, bettering the 4.63m cleared indoors by Angelica Bengtsson in 2011.

Perez 68.86m, Caballero 67.53m in Havana

There was some great discus throwing at this open meet. Yaime Perez improved to 68.86m over world champion Denia Caballero’s 67.53m. In the men’s event Jorge Fernandez threw 63.31m. Roberto Janet won the hammer with 75.86m and Yaniuvis Lopez 18.04m in the women’s shot.

Seventeen-year-old Juan Echevarria leaped to a windy 8.15m (+2.9) in the long jump, with also a legal 7.96m. His fellow teenager Leslie Caesa won the triple jump with 17.15m (+3.8, legal 16.54m). World junior silver medallist from Eugene Liadagmis Povea won the women’s triple jump with 14.54m (+2.7) and leapt a legal PB of 14.33m (0.0). Second was two-time world champion Yargelis Savigne with 14.09m (0.0) which was her best mark since 2012.

Athletes for Asian Indoor Championships

As well as the already-announced high jump star Mutaz Essa Barshim and Olympic triple jump gold medallist Olga Rypakova, several other top names are set to compete at the Asian Indoor Championships in Doha from Friday to Sunday.

In total 432 athletes representing 37 nations are expected. Those who aim to repeat their 2014 successes are Qataris Samuel Francis (60m), Musaeb Abdulrahman Balla (800m), Mohamad Al-Garni (1500m and 3000m) and Barshim.

Mahdi Zamani and Maryam Toosi from Iran will also be looking to defend the 400m titles they captured in Hangzhou, China, as will Kuwaitis Abdulaziz Al-Mandeel (60m hurdles) and Saleh Al-Haddad (long jump) and Japan s Tomomi Abiko in the pole vault.

India s Om Prakash Singh is rated among the favourites in the shot put in his quest for back-to-back Asian indoor titles, as is Uzbekistan s Svetlana Radzivil in the women’s high jump.

Cao Shuo in the triple jump, Minjia Lu in the long jump and Tianqian Guo in the shot put look to enforce China s bid to reclaim the top spot from reigning champs Qatar on the medal table.

Suzuki possibly out of Rio

The 20km race walk world record-holder Yusuke Suzuki might be out of the Rio Olympic Games. As Ken Nakamura wrote on social media website Twitter, he has withdrawn from the National Walking Championships. Last March he clocked the 1:16:36 global top mark at the Asian Walking Championships but did not finish at the Beijing World Championships due to injury.

Defar’s “biggest race”

Meseret Defar described the 3000m at the Boston Indoor Grand Prix as the biggest race of my life”, reports IAAF.

Defar was racing on the track for the first time 2013 and came very close to her meeting record of 8:30.05 with a world-leading 8:30.83.

Now, after the race, I feel my confidence rising. I want to prepare for the World Indoor Championships,” she said.

Juska and Otterling in Jablonec

European indoor silver and bronze long jump medallists Radek Juska and Andreas Otterling are set to go head-to-head in Jablonec on March 5.

European indoor 60m hurdles champion Alina Talay will also compete, along with the previously-announced Renaud Lavillenie in the men’s pole vault.

The traditional meet will this year have a gala status with EA Indoor Permit. More top names are to be announced later.
