A round-up of recent athletics news and results, including a top pole vault field set for the Diamond League in Eugene and a world youth indoor pole vault best by Lisa Gunnarsson in Eaubonne

Top duel in Eugene pole vault

Shawn Barber, Raphael Holzdeppe and Renaud Lavillenie will headline a star-studded pole vault field at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene on May 28.

The line-up for the Diamond League event also includes the Polish duo of Pawel Wojciechowski and Piotr Lisek, world indoor champion Konstadinos Filippidis from Greece, Brazil s Thiago Braz and US champion Sam Kendricks.

Lavillenie has won the last three editions of this meeting and set an outdoor PB and Diamond League record of 6.05m in last year s meeting. With information from organisers.

Alemu 2:01.31, Gunnarsson 4.47m youth all-time best in Eaubonne

The Eaubonne meeting was highlighted by Ethiopian junior Habitam Alemu who clocked 2:01.31 in the 800m to miss the world under-20 indoor record by just 0.28. Behind her, Britain’s Jenny Meadows clocked 2:02.85.

Jamaican Simone Facey clocked 7.14 in the 60m ahead of Carole Zahi who improved to 7.23. In the hurdles, Britain’s European champion Tiffany Porter clocked 7.98 over USA’s Bridgette Owens’ 8.03 followed by France’s Sandra Gomis with 8.04 and Croatian Andrea Ivancevic with 8.05. European heptathlon champion Antoinette Nana Djimou posted 8.45 in the heats.

Greek world medalist Nikoleta Kyriakopoulou cleared 4.65m in the pole vault and tried at 4.77m. Second was Angelica Bengtsson with 4.53m over Vanessa Boslak with 4.47m and 16-year-old Lisa Gunnarsson of Sweden also with 4.47m for a world youth indoor best. It also equals the outdoor all-time youth best of another Swedish athlete, Bengtsson, who cleared that height in 2010.

Shara Proctor won the long jump with a leap of 6.50m and Ukraine’s Oksana Okuneva the high jump with 1.90m. Morocco’s Malika Akkaoui topped the 1500m in 4:16.36 over Bahrain’s Tigist Gashaw with 4:16.45 and Britain’s Hannah England with 4:17.52.

US Olympic marathon trials

News before the US Olympic trials for the marathon this weekend in Los Angeles is that Ryan Vail is out due to a stress fracture.

US marathon record-holder Deena Kastor, who won a bronze medal in the 2004 Athens Olympic marathon and was considered a prime contender for a top-three finish, has withdrawn because of an unspecified injury.

Edgar Rivera clears Mexican record

Mexican Edgar Rivera won the 21st edition of the Brno high jump meeting with a 2.30m clearance to break the national indoor record. He achieved that mark on his third attempt after clearing 2.25m and passing 2.28m.

Second was Mohamed Younes Idriss of Sudan with 2.25m. He also tried at 2.30m for what would have been a national record.

Yuriy Dumchev dies aged 57

ARAF informs that former discus world record-holder Yuriy Dumchev died at the age of 57 on Wednesday evening.

In 1983 he threw his world record of 71.86m. He was fifth at the Moscow 1980 and fourth at Seoul 1988 Olympic Games.
