A round-up of some of the top athletics news and results from around the world, including a 4.71m clearance by 17-year-old Finnish pole vaulter Murto in Germany

Murto 4.71m world junior record

Finnish pole vaulter Wilma Murto twice improved the overall world junior record at a meeting in Zweibrucken, Germany, on Sunday.

First the 17-year-old cleared 4.65m and then 4.71m to better the best outdoor junior mark of 4.64m set by Eliza McCartney of New Zealand and the best indoor mark of 4.63m by Angelica Bengtsson from Sweden.

On Sunday Murto started with 4.25m and went to clear 4.35m and 4.45m on her first attempts. Then she equalled her national junior record of 4.55m and achieved her first world junior record clearance of the day with 4.65m on her first go. She cleared 4.71m on her second attempt.

Murto’s mark is also the best ever by a female Finnish athlete in any category or conditions.

In second, Nicole Buchler of Switzerland cleared a 4.65m national record ahead of Finnish former record-holder Minna Nikkanen with 4.45m and home favourite Silke Spiegelburg with 4.45m.

The 2013 world champion Raphael Holzdeppe won the men’s event with 5.71m ahead of Robert Sobera from Poland and French Kevin Menaldo as both cleared 5.61m.

Rowbury 4:26.01 WL

The Camel City Invitational saw a world leading 3:54.02 by Matt Centrowitz in the mile ahead of Cory Leslie’s 3:56.25 PB.

The 3000m was won by Garrett Heath in 7:48.48 over Lawi Lalang’s 7:50.07.

There was also a world lead in the women’s mile with 4:26.01 by Shannon Rowbury ahead of Stephanie Garcia’s 4:28.47 PB and Heidi See’s 4:33.30 PB.

Brianna Rollins won the hurdles in 7.95 ahead of Nia Ali with 8.03, Kristin Castlin with 8.04 and Lolo Jones with 8.17. The men’s hurdles had Aleec Harris as winner with 7.65, with Ashton Eaton fourth in 7.77 (but he clocked 7.70 in the heats and 6.82 in 60m prelims).

Ramon Gittens of Barbados won the 60m in 6.61. Canadian world medallist Melissa Bishop won the 800m in 2:02.10 and Katie Nageotte improved in the pole vault to 4.61m. Kerri Gallagher won the 3000m in 8:56.52 PB.

Czech team wins international combined events match

The international match in combined events in Reims, France, had the Czech team as overall winners with 29,694 points over France with 29,492, Spain with 28,646 and Great Britain with 28,438.

Heptathlon winner Jorge Urena scored not only a Spanish record but also a world lead of 6076 points.

Pentathlon winner Eliska Klucinova got 4425 points over her Czech team-mate Katerina Cachova 4277 and Britain’s Jessica Taylor with 4214.

Mutaz Essa Barshim 2.34m

World indoor high jump champion Mutaz Essa Barshim is currently at a training camp in Malmo and as part of his training he jumped at the Pallas Spelen meet to clear a world-leading 2.34m.

In the long jump Khaddi Sagnia leapt 6.61m and Andreas Otterling 7.79m. Irene Ekelund clocked 24.05 in the 200m.

Elaine Thompson 7.17 outdoors

Last year’s Beijing World Championships 200m silver medal winner Elaine Thompson opened with 7.17 (+1.6) in the 60m outdoors at the 15th staging of the Queens/Grace Jackson Invitational held at the National Stadium in Kingston.

I was pleased with my final 20 metres,” she said.

Audra Segree, who won heat three, was second overall with 7.18 (+1.7). Shimayra Williams was third overall in 7.21 (+1.7), while Bahamian Sheniqua Ferguson, the winner of heat one, was timed in 7.24 (+1.0).

From heat three of the men s equivalent, Oshane Bailey topped the field in 6.60 (+1.7) ahead of Ronald Levy’s 6.62 and Julian Forte’s 6.63.

The women s 200m saw Anastasia Le-Roy finishing ahead of World Championships 400m bronze medallist Shericka Jackson 22.87 (+0.3) to 22.95. Stephenie-Ann McPherson was third in 23.15.

Anneisha McLaughlin-Whilby with 52.87 topped the women s 400m. Edino Steele was the best in the men s 400m after crossing the line in 46.39.
