Stretch for plantar fasciitis

‘Walking on glass’ is how those suffering with plantar fasciitis often describe the pain. Lexie Williamson outlines a stretch that can help to relieve it

This stretch might make you grimace, but is worth it. The combination of curling up your toes and stretching the soles of your feet can feel intense, so ease into it gently.

Step 1

Start by getting down on all fours and turn your toes under so that you are on the balls of your feet (see image above). Glance back between your knees to ensure that your toes are spread evenly. If this feels enough of a stretch, remain in this position, breathing steadily.

Step 2

Slowly begin moving backwards, inching towards a kneeling position. You may find you need to stop halfway with your fingertips resting on the floor. If comfortable, sit all the way back on your heels with a straight back.

Step 3

Ease back on to all fours and repeat the entire stretch again.

Lexie Williamson is a Yoga Sports Science qualified instructor and author of Yoga For Runners (Bloomsbury, 16.99)
