Three-time Paralympic gold medallist Miller and four-time Ironman world champion Chrissie Wellington are among those to receive recognition in the New Year Honours list

Stephen Miller has been made an MBE for services to sport in the New Year Honours list.

The three-time Paralympic champion claimed club throw gold medals at Atlanta in 1996, Sydney in 2000 and Athens in 2004. Those victories formed part of Miller’s 12-year win streak in the event between 1996 and 2008.

The 35-year-old, who was the world record-holder from 1997 to 2008, is working towards his aim of competing at a sixth Paralympic Games in Rio next summer.

“So proud to be able to announce that I’ve been chosen to receive an MBE from the Queen in the New Year Honours for services to sport,” Miller wrote on Twitter.

“Sport has given me so much, I hope I can justify being given this huge honour by continuing to be the best role model I can be and by helping others to find the joy of sport.”

Ian Mirfin and Janice Eaglesham are also among those to receive recognition in the New Year Honours list and will be awarded MBEs for services to disability sport.

Eaglesham has been involved in athletics for 37 years, having started off as a guide runner. She worked with Mirfin to found Red Star Athletics Club in 1990 and is now is the chair of Scottish Disability Sport, while Mirfin is the Paralympic events lead for Scottish Athletics.

Dedicated official James Callander has been made an MBE for voluntary services to athletics. Having been involved with the sport for more than 20 years, Callander has officiated at events including London 2012 and the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Also among those recognised in the New Year Honours list is four-time Ironman triathlon world champion Chrissie Wellington who has been made an OBE for services to sport and charity.

The 38-year-old is the head of participation for parkrun and after the announcement of her OBE she said on Twitter: “May my OBE also be dedicated to everyone involved in @parkrun. People who are truly changing lives each and every day.”
