International Olympic Committee also asks IAAF to initiate disciplinary procedures against Olympic Games participants who are accused of doping in Independent Commission report

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has provisionally suspended former International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) president Lamine Diack as an honorary member.

The announcement follows news last week that Diack has been placed under investigation by French police on suspicion of corruption and money-laundering.

The IOC also confirmed that it has asked the IAAF to initiate disciplinary procedures against Olympic Games participants who are accused of doping in a report published by a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Independent Commission.

The Independent Commission, chaired by WADA’s founding president Dick Pound, was formed after the broadcast of an ARD documentary ‘Top-secret doping: How Russia makes its winners in December 2014. The first part of the Independent Commission s report was published on Monday.

“The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is closely monitoring the situation after the Independent Commission of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) released its report on 9 November,” read an IOC statement in part. “The IOC expects the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and WADA to consider all necessary action to be taken to protect the clean athletes and rebuild trust.”

The IOC outlined the steps it has currently decided to take.

“The IOC s Executive Board decided this afternoon to confirm the proposal of the IOC Ethics Commission to provisionally suspend Mr. Lamine Diack, the former President of IAAF, from his honorary membership of the IOC,” the statement continued.

Related to the Olympic Games, the statement added: “The IOC has asked the IAAF to initiate disciplinary procedures against all athletes, coaches and officials who have participated in the Olympic Games and are accused of doping in the report of the Independent Commission.

“With its zero-tolerance policy against doping, following the conclusion of this procedure, the IOC will take all the necessary measures and sanctions with regard to the withdrawal and reallocation of medals and as the case may be exclusion of coaches and officials from future Olympic Games.”

Later on Tuesday, the IAAF announced that Diack had resigned as president of the International Athletics Foundation (IAF).

“The IAAF confirms it has tonight received a letter from Lamine Diack resigning his position as president of the International Athletics Foundation (IAF),” read a statement from the world governing body.

“This information has been passed to IAF honorary president HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco.

“Discussions will be held in due course regarding the IAF and the appointment of a new IAF president.”
