Sprinter is among the world record-breakers on the first day of IPC Athletics World Championships action as she shaves 0.4 from her own T38 100m best

Sophie Hahn, Kadeena Cox, Aled Davies and Hannah Cockroft won gold medals for Great Britain as the IPC Athletics World Championships got underway in Doha on Thursday.

Clocking 12.60, teenage sprinter Hahn took four tenths of a second off her own world T38 100m record set at the IPC Grand Prix meeting in London in July to retain her title, while her team-mate Olivia Breen was fourth in 13.46.

“It feels amazing to be a world champion and to smash the world record,” said Hahn. “I am in shock and really didn t know I could run this fast!

“I’ve been working really hard on my starts and it paid off today.

“I’ve watched the Diamond League on this track so I knew it was quick.”

Cox also broke her own world T37 100m record in the semi-finals with a time of 13.59 before returning to the track to take the world title in 13.60. Completing a GB 1-2 was world T37 400m record-holder Georgie Hermitage with a time of 13.87, which followed her PB of 13.79 in the semi-finals. Their fellow Briton Jenny McLoughlin ran 14.41 in fifth.

With his F42 shot put victory, Davies claimed GB’s first gold of the championships and the team’s second medal after David Weir s marathon silver secured in London in April. Paralympic discus champion Davies threw a championship record of 14.95m in the final round.

“It’s probably not the performance I wanted, but I came here and I won a major title and that’s what matters at the end of the day,” said the Welshman, who underwent a hernia operation just 10 weeks ago.

“I know I didn t perform as well as I could have, but I got the gold medal and that s what it s all about.”

Cockroft was another to retain her world title in a championship record time. The double Paralympic champion clocked 17.73 to win the T34 100m ahead of USA’s Alexa Halko, while Cockroft’s GB team-mate Kare Adenegan clocked 19.35 in fourth.

With a 21.09m PB, Britain’s Abbie Hunnisett claimed bronze in an F32 club throw competition won by Tunisia’s Maroua Ibrahmi with 22.58m, while GB’s Gemma Prescott finished fourth with a throw of 19.52m.

Samantha Kinghorn also added a bronze to GB’s medal haul as she finished third in 30.72 behind winner Angela Ballard of Australia with a 29.33 championship record in the T53 200m.

Dan Greaves placed fourth in the F44 discus, which was won by USA’s Jeremy Campbell with a championship record throw of 61.21m.

France’s Marie-Amelie Le Fur broke her own world T44 long jump record with 5.84m, while in the T42 long jump, Germany’s Vanessa Low also broke the world record with 4.79m.
