The two Kenyan athletes have been provisionally suspended after their samples from Beijing test positive

Two Kenyan athletes, Joyce Zakary and Koki Manunga, have been provisionally suspended after samples they provided in Beijing tested positive for banned substances.

Zakary had bettered her own 400m national record time from 51.14 to 50.71 in the IAAF World Championships heats on Monday, while Manunga finished sixth in her 400m hurdles heat with a time of 58.96 on Sunday.

Zakary had qualified for the 400m semi-finals but did not run.

“These targeted tests were conducted by the IAAF at the athlete hotels during the pre-competition phase,” read an IAAF statement in part. “The IAAF Rules dictate that the IAAF is only able to make a public disclosure once this provisional suspension is in place.”

The IAAF announced that Manunga’s positive sample was provided on Thursday August 20, while Zakary’s was given the day after.
