Manchester Quadrathlon celebrates 10th anniversary

A team competition is to be introduced for the 10th running of the Stockport Harriers-organised youth athletics event

The Manchester Quadrathlon celebrates its 10th anniversary on June 27 and will see a team competition included in the Stockport Harriers-organised youth athletics event for the first time.

Open to athletes from the age of seven to under-15s, the event returns to Manchester’s Sportcity for its 10th edition with each young athlete competing in four individual events. Athletes receive points for each sprint, middle-distance, jump and throws performance and the overall top three athletes in each age group receive awards.

In 2015, athletes will not only compete for their individual points but where clubs have three athletes in an age group the scores will be combined for a team tally. Stockport Harriers, Sale Harriers and West Cheshire AC are among the clubs set to have teams compete, with organisers noting that the under-13 girls section looks particularly competitive.

The event has grown every year since the first edition which was held in Stockport in 2006, with around 50 athletes now involved in each age group. Over 6000 results have been recorded at summer Quadrathlon competitions, with an indoor event also having taking place in winter since 2012.

“The beauty of the Quadrathlon is not simply that it promotes long term athlete development, but it provides an opportunity for athletes to measure themselves against themselves,” said event director Mike Frost.

“Each returning athlete can set a personal performance or points goal which may or may not result in a medal-winning performance but achieving that goal is a personal success for that individual.

“I am as excited as ever for this year’s Quadrathlon, not only with the 10th anniversary of the event but also the introduction of team awards which should make the competition even more exciting.”

Further information can be found at www.shacquadrathlon.co.uk, with entry open until Thursday June 18.
