A video interview with the European pentathlon champion as she looks ahead to the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games and IAAF World Championships

Katarina Johnson-Thompson recently confirmed her intention to contest the long jump at the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games on July 24-25.

To mark the announcement the European pentathlon champion and 2014 heptathlon No.1 took part in a ‘Girl on Fire’ photo shoot and spoke about her hopes for the season ahead.

After claiming her European pentathlon title with a British record 5000 points in Prague in early March, Johnson-Thompson suffered a knee injury which affected her training and she was forced to withdraw from the Hypo-Meeting in Gotzis which took place at the end of last month. She recovered enough to finish second in the 200m hurdles at the Athletics Weekly Great CityGames Manchester earlier on in May but was not in a position to contest the seven-discipline event.

“My full training is going really well at the minute,” the 22-year-old said at the photo shoot. “I had a slight injury so that delayed the training for Beijing but now I’m back into it and I’m really enjoying it.

“I need to take what I do in training into competition,” she added. “For the Worlds, my ambitions are I do want a medal there. I want to go into it and do what I’m capable of and hopefully that will be enough to get a medal.

“My big competition before Worlds will be the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games. I’ll be competing there in the long jump, my favourite event, and that will really test my fitness out four weeks ahead of Beijing.”
