British athletes continue to break records at the first IPC Athletics Grand Prix of 2015

Maria Lyle and Jo Butterfield broke IPC world records in the T35 200m and F51 discus respectively on the final day of IPC Athletics Grand Prix action in Dubai.

Double IPC European champion Lyle finished third behind Netherlands’ double world champion Marlou van Rhijn in the combined T35/36/43/44/46 event on Wednesday, the 15-year-old clocking 30.53 to better her own T35 world record mark she had set in Bedford last year by 0.18. Van Rhijn, who had broken her own T43 100m world record two days earlier, ran 27.50 for victory.

Lyle later tweeted: “Very happy with today’s 200m! A new world record is amazing!”

Butterfield threw 8.87m in the combined F32/33/51 discus competition to better the previous F51 world record mark by 27 centimetres. Earlier on at the Grand Prix and the 35-year-old had thrown 19.69m for 1114 points in the F51 club throw competition – the event in which she won European gold last year – to break the European record.

Butterfield tweeted: “So happy with discus perf today, new world record #wow.”

Fellow British athlete Aled Davies had earlier set two world records in as many days as the competition got underway on Sunday and Monday.

Sophie Hahn and Olivia Breen filled the top two places in the T37/38 200m, with T38 sprinter Hahn running a wind-assisted 27.20.

Graeme Ballard was victorious in the T35/36 200m, clocking 25.60 to finish more than two seconds clear.

Winning the T54 1500m, Switzerland’s Marcel Hug claimed his third gold in Dubai.
