A look back at some of the top performances from the past week including those from the Midland Open, BUCS Indoors, XL Galan and Tokyo Marathon

It was a busy weekend with the Sainsbury’s Indoor Grand Prix in Birmingham (a report for which can be found here), as well as the English, Scottish and Welsh National Cross Country Championships (click here for a round-up report) but there was also plenty of other action.

Indoors

British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) Indoor Championships, Sheffield, February 20-22

Making her season debut, Bianca Williams ran a 60m PB of 7.34 for victory the day before running 7.39 at the Indoor Grand Prix.

Amy Allcock retained her 400m title, breaking her own championship best mark with 53.19. David Hall also broke the championship best with 46.91 to beat Joe Reid and Alex Boyce.

GB heptathlete Karla Drew was another to successfully defend a title, taking 60m hurdles gold in 8.38. David King won the men’s event in 7.86.

Youcef Zatat threw 16.50m to win the shot competition by over one metre ahead of Luke Roach-Christie.

Midland Open, Birmingham, February 22

The top race was the 400m which saw a really close battel won by Rory Evans in 47.23 missing his indoor PB by an agonising 0.01 of a second and that was the winning margin over Luke Lennon-Ford (47.24). Jamie Bowie (47.26) and Conrad Williams (47.42) also made a case for Prague 4x400m selection.

Kelly Massey (pictured) won the women s 400m in 52.94 to equal her indoor PB set in the Glasgow international match.

World masters champion Darren Scott won the 200m in an European M45 record of 22.58 to just miss Bill Collins’ 22.57 world record but did get a world record when he was part of a M45 team that set a 4x200m record of 1:33.97.

Metro Atlantic Indoor Championships, New York, February 21

European Cross runner-up Kate Avery won the mile in 4:40.13

Canadian Indoor Championships, Montreal, February 21

Britain’s former world 400m hurdles champion Dai Greene showed he is wintering well with a 600m in 77.59, which saw him place third in a race won by Dominican Republic s Olympic and world medalist Luguelin Santos in a Central American record of 1:16.01

French Championships, Aubierrre, February 21-22

Renaud Lavillenie cleared a world-leading 6.01m on his second attempt before three unsuccessful tries at a world record height of 6.18m

Kafetien Gomis set a world lead in the long jump with 8.18m.

Czech Indoor Championships, Prague, February 21-22

Pavel Maslak set a world-leading 400m of 45.27.

XL Galan, Stockholm, Sweden, February 19

Genzebe Dibaba broke the world indoor 5000m record with 14:18.86 to beat the previous mark set by her compatriot Meseret Defar also run in Stockholm in 2009 by more than five seconds. A more in-depth online report can be found here.

Athlone International Grand Prix, Ireland, February 18

Mutaz Essa Barshim added one centimetre to his own Asian indoor high jump record with a first-time clearance of 2.41m. His younger brother Muamer Barshim finished second with an indoor PB of 2.25m.

British indoor champion Abigail Irozuru won the long jump with another fine leap of 6.63m.

Lodz, February 17

World indoor 60m champion Richard Kilty won the 60m in 6.54.

Track and field

IPC Athletics Grand Prix, Dubai, UAE, February 22-23

Aled Davies threw 48.87m to better his own world F42 discus record by 18cm on the opening day of competition at the IPC Athletics Grand Prix in Dubai. Davies recently spoke to AW about his coaching switch and change of technique.

He returned on Monday to throw a world F42 shot record distance of 15.92m which is one centimetre off his PB set at the Sainsbury’s Indoor British Championships.

Hannah Cockroft won the T34 200m and 800m and on Monday followed that up with a win over 400m, while Switzerland’s Marcel Hug retained his T54 800m title and Tunisia’s Walid Ktila claimed victories in the T34 200m and 800m.

Germany’s Markus Rehm dominated the men’s long jump T35-38/42/44 competition, leaping a best of 7.79m for 1100 points to seal victory.

Road

Tokyo Marathon, February 22

In the first world marathon major of the year, there was an Ethiopian double with Endeshaw Negesse winning the men s race in 2:06:00 and Birhane Dibaba the women s in 2:23:15.

Second man was Olympic and world champion Stephen Kiprotich, who set a Ugandan record of 2:06:33, while Olympic women s winner Tiki Gelana was third in the women s race in 2:24:26.

Vitality Brighton Half-Marathon, February 22

New Zealand-born Paul Martelletti won the race which attracted 8000 runners in 65:48 while first woman, Julia Davis, set a five minute PB in winning the women s race in 78:26 with last year s winner Sarah Hill second.
