Katarina Johnson-Thompson made her comeback after injury and Adam Hague continued his fine form to clear an outright UK junior pole vault record

Adam Hickey and Lily Partridge were among the winners at Sunday s Cardiff Cross Challenge as many athletes returned to the mud for the second event in the British Athletics series.

Elsewhere, there were promising results recorded both indoors and out on the roads. Katarina Johnson-Thompson made her comeback after injury and Adam Hague continued his fine form to break his own UK indoor junior pole vault record, clearing an outright British junior record 5.51m.

Indoor

North of England Championships, Sheffield, January 17/18

In her first competition for over six months following her summer injury, Katarina Johnson-Thompson made a fine start to 2015.

She won the long jump with a quality 6.63m, which was vastly superior to her performance in 2014, and equalled her PB from last year to retain her 60m hurdles title in 8.40.

Her shot didn’t quite match up though and she finished fourth with 12.32m which was down on her performance of last year but was still superior to her shot in the world-leading outdoor heptathlon mark at Gotzis.

Adam Hague vaulted 5.51m to add 5cm to his British junior pole vault record, while Annabelle Lewis won the 6om in 7.39. Tom Somers won the under-20 200m in 21.29.

South of England Championships, Lee Valley, January 17/18

Serita Solomon scored a winning 60m and 60m hurdles double. She won the 60m in a PB 7.50 and just missed her PB in the 60m hurdles in 8.18.

Shannon Hylton gained a winning double in the under-20 60m and 200m. She won the 60m in 7.46 and the 200 in 23.98.

Her twin sister Cheriece was second in both races in 7.60 and 24.26.

Reno, USA, January 16

Olympic pole vault champion Renaud Lavillenie set a world lead and meeting record of 5.92m.

Briton Steve Lewis finished third with 5.65m, while Greece’s European silver medalist Ekaterini Stefanidi won the women’s competition with an indoor PB of 4.60m.

Cross country

IAAF Permit, Seville, January 18

Eritrea s Teklemariam Medhin and Kenya s Emily Chebet gained impressive victories. Medhin won by 11 seconds in 32:27 while Chebet timed 27:15 for a 19 second victory.

Road

Houston Marathon, January 18

In perfect conditions, Ethiopian Yebrqual Melese won the women’s race in a PB 2:23:23, while her compatriot Birhanu Gidefa outkicked Gebo Burka to win the men’s race in 2:08:03.

Brass Monkey Half Marathon, York, January 18

In icy conditions, both Daniel Jenkin (68:58) and Shona McIntosh (76:13) set PBs and went top of the UK rankings for 2015.

Parkrun, January 17

Carolyn Milne achieved the highest age-grading score of the weekend with a 19:39 victory at Aberdeen, which earned her 90.93%.

Ben Robinson’s 14:24 at Kingsbury Water Park was the fastest time.
