The big event this week was the Great Edinburgh Cross Country, but elsewhere Aled Davies provided one of the top performances with an F42 shot put world record in Cardiff

Indoor

Cardiff Met New Year Classic, January 11

Aled Davies threw 15.53m for an F42 shot put world record. The mark added 40cm to his previous best. He also holds the outdoor record with 15.13m.

The Paralympic, world and European champion began working with his new coach Ryan Spencer-Jones last year.

Davies tweeted: “Cobwebs shaken off! 15.53m first competition of the year. Personal best and World Record. Big thank you to my coach @ryanshotput”

Capital Perche, France, January 10

Olympic champion and world record-holder Renaud Lavillenie opened his indoor season with first attempt clearances at 5.60m, 5.70m and 5.80m before failing at 5.94m.

Marion Fiack set a French record of 4.71m in the women’s event.

Midland Counties Open, Birmingham, January 11

Italy’s Marco Fassinotti was among those to set early world leads as he cleared 2.32m in the high jump. Chris Kandu was second with 2.23m, an indoor PB and a mark just one centimetre off his overall best recorded outdoors in 2014.

In the women’s event, Isobel Pooley’s 1.90m indoor personal best was also a world lead.

Julian Reid recorded 7.91m in the long jump.

England Combined Events Championships, Sheffield, January 10/11

Ben Gregory (5663) and Karla Drew (4199) won keenly contested senior titles. Drew’s winning score is a personal best that moves her to 10th on the UK pentathlon all-time list. Jess Taylor added more than 300 points to her PB to finish second with 4172 and go 11th UK all-time, while Martin Brockman’s 5601 points for second in the heptathlon is also a PB.

Loughborough Open, January 10

Double world junior champion Morgan Lake won the long jump with 5.84m.

BMC Sheffield, January 11

Irish marathoner Paul Pollock, who competed for Northern Ireland in the Commonwealth Games, showed good speed to win the 3000m in a PB 7:59.25.

In second, Jake Shelley took over 10 seconds off his PB to break eight minutes for the first time.

Cross country

Morrisons Great Edinburgh Cross Country, Holyrood Park, January 10

Emelia Gorecka, Chris Derrick and Garrett Heath were among the winners, Gorecka securing her first major senior win on the mud and Derrick and Heath retaining their titles.

Inter Area races, Edinburgh, January 10

The senior men’s inter area race held in conjunction with the Edinburgh Cross was won by the North’s Daniel Cliffe in 27:13 from Scotland East’s Murray Strain in 27:16. Morag MacLarty of Scotland East won the women’s race in 23:17 by five seconds from the North’s Ashley Gibson.

Birmingham and District League, Division 1, Coventry, January 10

Phil Wylie of Cheltenham gained his second league win of the season in 26:45. Birmingham University won the team event.

2XU Surrey Men’s League, Streatham Common, January 10

Belgrave Harriers’ Ugandan Paskar Owor followed up last week’s Surrey Championships win with another victory but was given a surprisingly tough race from M40 masters International winner Chris Greenwood, who led Kent AC to victory which has seemingly sewed up the league title with a fixture still to go.

Metropolitan League, Perivale, January 10

Olympic marathoner Lee Merrien made a rare appearance on the country and won the men’s race in 30:19. Highgate won the team event and look destined to win the overall league.

Rachel Felton won her sixth Metropolitan League in a year. The newly crowned Hertfordshire champion won in 22:26 from former British steeplechase record holder and National winner Lizzy Janes and her club Shaftesbury Barnet are in command in the team event.

Yorkshire Championships, Ripon, January 10

Jonathan Thewlis, last year’s Midlands champion, was an easy men’s winner of this county championships which was held a week after the other counties.

Alexandra Bell, who was only fifth last year, was a surprise women’s winner. The 2:03.16 800m performer won by three seconds from Claire Duck.

Surrey Ladies League, Wimbledon, January 10

Herne Hill’s Cathy Ansell won her second league race of the season in 31:29 from South of Thames champion Mel Wilkins.
