British duo to line up alongside likes of Jenny Simpson and Mary Cain in New York

Commonwealth 1500m silver medallist Laura Weightman and race regular Hannah England will be among those to compete in the Fifth Avenue Mile in New York on Saturday.

Weightman has the third quickest 1500m personal best of the women’s field and will look to end a great season on a high, the 23-year-old also having won a European bronze medal in a summer which has seen her lower her PB to 4:00.17.

England, the 2011 world 1500m silver medallist, has run under 4:29 in the New York event five times, while world indoor championships representative Lee Emanuel is the sole British athlete in the men s race.

The women s field is highlighted by the woman who beat England to the title in Daegu, defending champion Jenny Simpson of the United States, who earlier this year clocked a 1500m PB of 3:57.22 and is the best in the world over the distance at the moment.

Also in the field is Mary Cain, the 18-year-old who won the world junior 3000m title last year and lives around 15 miles from the course. Brenda Martinez of the United States, the 2012 winner, and Kenya s world 10,000m No.1 Sally Kipyego will also compete.

“So excited I’m ending my season in New York at the @nyrr #5thAveMile,” tweeted Weightman. “What better place to end a dream season!”

The men s race is headlined by American Matt Centrowitz, the 2013 world 1500m silver medallist.

The fastest miler in the field and the only sub-3:30 1500m runner is Kenya s Augustine Choge, who has clocked 3:50.01. They will be challenged by Wannamaker Mile champion Will Cheer, while Ireland s Ciaran O Lionaird is also in the line-up.

“I’ve only had the privilege to race the Fifth Avenue Mile once in my professional career and I can safely safe it’s one of the most exciting races I’ve been part of,” said Centrowitz.

“Winning in 2012 was one of the highlights of the season and I’ll be looking for the same result this year.”
