Paralympic and world throws champ Aled Davies and teenagers Maria Lyle and Samantha Kinghorn add further golds to GB’s medal tally at the IPC Athletics European Championships

Aled Davies added the European F42 shot put title to his world and Paralympic throws golds, while 14-year-old Maria Lyle continued to impress on her GB debut, taking the T35 200m title to go with her 100m win from the day before in Swansea.

Samantha Kinghorn also added to GB’s medal haul on Thursday, the 18-year-old winning her third gold medal of the championships with victory in the T53 800m.

Welshman Davies returned to his winning ways in front of a home crowd as fresh from Commonwealth F42/44 discus silver he threw a best of 13.66m to grow a medal collection which also includes Paralympic shot gold and discus bronze as well as world golds in both events. He will also go for gold in the discus competition on Saturday.

Lyle, who had finished more than a second and a half clear when winning the shorter sprint on Wednesday, returned to the track to dominate once again, her 31.05 more than three seconds quicker than her nearest rival. The teenager also holds the world records for both distances.

Kinghorn had already enjoyed success in the T53 100m and 400m events but she added another gold to that tally with a time of 2:18.40 to beat Turkey’s Hamide Kurt over 800m.

Also in throws action on day three of the championships was four-time Paralympic gold medallist David Casino of Spain who added the European F11 discus title to his collection. Russia’s Anna Sapozhnikova secured her first major title in style as she broke the European F37 long jump record with 4.46m as all three medallists bettered the previous mark set three years ago.

Ireland’s Jason Smyth had added the European T12 100m title to his global golds on Tuesday before saying how the Swansea event is an important step on the road to the Rio Paralympic Games in two years time. The four-time Paralympic T13 gold medallist, making his T12 class debut in Swansea, followed that up by claiming victory in the half-lap sprint event too, clocking 21.67 to take the title ahead of Spain’s Joan Munar Mart nez.

Switzerland’s Marcel Hug claimed another gold in a T54 800m race missing GB’s David Weir through injury. World record-holder Hug clocked 1:37.77 to beat Kenny van Weeghel of the Netherlands.

There was a German one-two in the men’s T44 200m as Felix Streng – silver medallist behind GB’s Jonnie Peacock in the 100m event two days before – clocked 22.93 to beat team-mate David Behre with 23.36. Marlou van Rhijn of the Netherlands did the double as she took the T44 200m title in 26.89 to add to her 100m victory in Swansea. GB’s Laura Sugar bagged 200m bronze as her team-mate Sophie Kamlish finished fifth.

Other GB medallists on day three included Richard Whitehead in the T42 200m, Jade Jones in the T54 800m, Ola Abidogun in the T47 100m, Graeme Ballard in the T36 200m and Mickey Bushell in the T53 200m as they all added silvers to GB’s haul. A bronze medal was claimed by Jordan Howe in the T35 200m.
