Commonwealth Games athletics tickets to go on sale Thursday as part of phased release following last week’s ticket sale suspension

Tickets to watch the athletics at this summer’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will go on sale on Thursday (May 22) as part of a phased ticket release, organisers announced on Monday.

Tickets for the track and field action at Hampden Park were among the 100,000 extra across all 17 sports that went on sale last Monday.

This general ticket sale led to what organisers described as “unprecedented demand”, creating problems with the ticket selling process. Sales were suspended on Tuesday to allow Glasgow 2014′s official ticketing agent Ticketmaster to investigate the issues experienced by some customers.

Along with confirmation of this week’s phased release of tickets, organisers advised that free postage and a freephone ticketing hotline will also form part of new measures put in place to sell the remaining tickets for the Games.

“We were deeply disappointed by, and would like to apologise again for, the challenges experienced by many customers last week, during the launch of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games general ticket sale,” commented Chris Edmonds, chairman of Ticketmaster UK.

“We have been working tirelessly to ensure that we have checked, tested and tested again every component of the technical infrastructure supporting the ticketing website. We are confident that all customers will have a much improved customer experience this time around.

“We are still expecting to witness very high levels of demand on the site on each day this week, so would ask all customers to be patient, if they find themselves queuing. Our advice to everyone would be to refrain from refreshing their screens or opening multiple browsers.

“Our number one objective is to sell as many tickets as we can, to help deliver what will undoubtedly be a successful and unforgettable Commonwealth Games.”

The phased ticket release will begin at 10am on Wednesday (May 21) when tickets for hockey, netball, rugby sevens and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies will be available.

Athletics tickets will go up for sale from 10am on Thursday (May 22) along with tickets for badminton, squash and table tennis. Any unsold tickets from the previous day will also remain on sale.

Boxing and lawn bowls are among the sports for which tickets will become available from 10am on Friday (May 23), the final day of the phased release process.

More than 50,000 tickets remain available for Glasgow 2014, though organisers have not confirmed how many of those are for athletics specifically, with track and field action taking place at Hampden Park from July 27 to August 2. Swimming, track cycling and triathlon are among the sports for which tickets have sold out.
