Superb long jump in Eugene

Every major international championship gold medalist since 2009 is confirmed for the Prefontaine Classic s women s long jump on May 28, and the field includes three silver medalists looking to move up to the gold medal club at the Rio Olympics.

US stars Tianna Bartoletta and Brittney Reese are set to be among those in action, along with French 2014 world indoor champion Eloyse Lesueur, Britain’s world silver medallist Shara Proctor, Canadian record-holder Christabel Nettey, Ivana Spanovic and Janay DeLoach.

Jesus Angel Garcia set for World Race Walking Team Champs

World and European 20km race walk champion Miguel Angel Lopez leads a large Spanish team for the IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships in Rome on May 7-8, reports MARCA.

Super veteran Jesus Angel Garcia has also been named in the 50km walk, while the stand-out name in the women s team is Beatriz Pascual in the 20km.

South American Grand Prix

The South American Grand Prix circuit started in Ecuador at the Jefferson Perez Stadium at the weekend.

Olympic medalist Luguelin Santos of Dominican Republic won the 400m in 45.84 ahead of Venezuelans Albert Bravo 45.87 and Freddy Mezones 45.91.

In the highly-anticipated 10,000m walk, Andres Cocho won in 40:29.71. Brazilian record-holder Erica Sena won the women’s event in 46:03.90.

Home sprinter Narcisa Landazuri improved to 11.26 (+0.5) in the women’s 100m and achieved an Olympic Games standard.

In the 200m, Isidora Jimenez of Chile was the best in 23.05 (0.0).

In the men’s events there were wins for Stanly del Carmen of Dominican Republic with 10.33 (-0.2) and 20.80 (-0.5).

Brigith Merlano of Colombia won the women’s hurdles 13.02.

Carifta Games

On Sunday at the 45th Carifta Games there was a great javelin national senior record for 18-year-old Anderson Peters of Grenada who threw 78.28m.

Miguel Van Assen of Surinam topped the long jump with 7.66m (+0.3).

Sada Williams of Barbados showed top shape already in the 200m heats with 23.12 (-0.8). The 400m hurdles winner Shannon Kalawan of Jamaica improved to 56.29.

Jamaica won all four 4x100m relay events, in the under-20 category clocking 39.74 and 44.30 and in the under-18 40.40 and 45.87. There was bad news for 100m winner Nigel Ellis who was disqualified in his 200m heat.

Giro Media Blenio

Ethiopian Muktar Edris won the Giro Media Blenio for a second time after his win in 2013. This year it was with a time of 28:22.9 over the 10km course. Second was Eritrean Simon Tesfay in 28:26.2 and third Kenyan Geoffrey Korir in 28:31.9.

Best European was Italian Samuele Dini in 13th (30:06.3).

In the open women’s category, Mary Wanjohi retained her title in 34:16.5.

Carlsbad 5000

Further to the elite men’s runners announced so far, world junior 10,000m champion Joshua Cheptegei from Uganda will also compete in the Carlsbad 5000 next Sunday.
