Bernard Lagat and Andy Vernon for Carlsbad 5000

Bernard Lagat is set to run the Carlsbad 5000 road race on April 3.

“I m excited to be coming back to Carlsbad and running the 5km again. This year is a big year for me. Hopefully a successful race in Carlsbad will lead to my fifth trip to the Olympics this summer,” he said in press release from event organisers.

Expected to challenge Lagat is defending champion Lawi Lalang of Kenya.

Other top runners include Will Leer, Britain’s Andy Vernon and Australia’s Collis Birmingham.

Yegon wins from Gabius

Kenyan Geoffrey Yegon won the 70th Paderborn Easter Run 10km in 28:21 ahead of Germany’s Arne Gabius, who clocked 28:39, and Alex Cherop with 28:40.

Gabius was satisfied with his position after a three-week training camp in Kenya and his next race will be the Berlin Half Marathon before the London Marathon.

Karoline Bjerkeli Grovdal from Norway won the women’s race in 31:33 over Susan Jeptoo with 32:45 and Dorcas Kithome with 32:49. Fourth was Germany’s Katharina Heinig in a 33:04 PB. In sixth place was world steeplechase medalist Gesa Felicitas Krause with 33:36.

In the half-marathon, Ethiopia’s Fate Tola was the best in 69:48 ahead of Kenyan Maryanne Wanjiru’s 70:10 and Sonja Roman from Slovenia with 73:49.

Tola is in the process of obtaining German citizenship in time for the Olympic Games. Her marathon best is 2:25:14.

The men’s half-marathon was a Kenyan affair with Nicholas Korir clocking 61:42 ahead of Alfred Cherop’s 61:59 and Charles Maina with 62:30.

The total participation of 11,702 runners was new record for the event.

Raleigh Relays

The first day of Raleigh Relays action had hurdles specialist Johnny Dutch winning his 400m heat in 46.34.

Sean McLean posted a windy 10.13 (+3.1) in the 100m and Adarius Washington 13.68 (+1.3) over the hurdles.

Trey McRae improved in the high jump to 2.25m.

World-class 400m runner Francena McCorory was second in the 100m in a 11.55 (+1.9) personal best.

Amela Terzic won the 17th edition of the road race here over 3km ahead of Kenyans Stella Barsosio and Agnes Chebet.

In the men’s 5km, Wycliffe Biwott of Kenya was the best. Behind him, Hillary Kimaiyo was second, Joel Mwangi third and in fourth was Serbian Elzan Bibic.

Milcah Chemos welcomes CAS decision

Kenya s 2013 world steeplechase champion Milcah Chemos has welcomed the decision by the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) to award her the bronze medal from the 2012 Olympics and silver from the 2011 World Championships.

“I m happy the cheats have been banned but affected athletes like us should be compensated,” Chemos said on Friday.

Chemos is slowly regaining form after back surgery towards the end of 2014. “I have started training and hope to make it for Rio Olympics,” she said.

Trinidad & Tobago Grand Games

The Trinidad & Tobago Grand Games, a new invitational meet, has announced several top athletes for the event on May 21 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

The NACAC Area Permit Meet will have 12 events on the track and four in the field.

Keston Bledman and Michelle-Lee Ahye are two big name home talents for the 100m.

US athletes will also be featured. Charlene Lipsey will start in the women s 800m, while Eddie Lovett, the 2011 Pan Am Junior champion, will represent U.S. Virgin Islands in the 110m hurdles. Jamaican Peter Mathews will start in the men s 400m.
