Two days after breaking the world indoor mile record in Sweden, Genzebe Dibaba clocks 8:22.50 in Spain

At the Catalan Centenary Meeting in Sabadell, Spain, Genzebe Dibaba returned to the track just two days after breaking the world indoor mile record in Stockholm to run the second-fastest ever indoor 3000m.

Her time of 8:22.50 is a world lead and only Dibaba herself has ever gone quicker indoors with her world record of 8:16.60 clocked in 2014.

Gelete Burka ran 8:33.76 in second ahead of Gotytom Gebreslase with 8:54.65.

In the 800m, Morocco’s Malika Akkaoui ran 2:02.51 ahead of Kenya’s Margaret Wambui with 2:02.59. Ethiopian Basu Sado won the 1500m in 4:12:14 and Venezuelan record-holder Yulimar Rojas the triple jump with 14.35m.

In other events, Aman Wote won the 1500m in 3:39.28 over Ivan Lopez of Chile who clocked a national record 3:39.39. Spain’s Kevin Lopez achieved 1:46.26 in the 800 m and Kenyan Boniface Mweresa a 46.46 PB in the 400m.

Also of note was Yidiel Contreras’ 7.71 in the hurdles, Chinese world medalist Wang Jianan’s 7.77m in the long jump and a PB of 20.42m for Carlos Tobalina in the shot put.

Barshim 2.35m in Doha

Mutaz Essa Barshim cleared 2.35m to win his fourth successive title during first day at the Asian Indoor Championships at the Aspire Dome in Doha before three attempts at 2.40m. Runner-up Majed Ghazal cleared 2.28m, a national indoor record for Syria.

Another notable mark on the in-field was Li Ling s 4.70m clearance to win the pole vault, adding 19cm on to her Asian indoor record.

The Chinese shot putters also excelled: Geng Shuang and Guo Tianqian took a 1-2 with 18.06m and 17.44 respectively. Mayookha Johny also took gold for India in the long jump with 6.35m ahead of Vietnam s Bui Thi Thu Thao (6.30m) and Olympic triple jump champion Olga Rypakova (6.22m).

Iran’s Hassan Taftian won the 60m title in 6.56 ahead of team-mate Reza Ghasemi (6.66) and Eric Cray of Philippines 6.70 (6.57 equalled the national record in the semis) while Kazakhstan s Viktoriya Zyabkina won the women s 60m in a champs record of 7.27 ahead of Yuan Qiqi 7.33 and Dutee Chand, who won bronze by 0.003 in 7.37.

Betlhem Desalegn also won a tactical 1500m in 4:21.65. Another day one highlight was Bahrain s Kemi Adekoya s Asian record of 51.68 in the 400m heats.

Fresh from him 500m world best, Abdelalelah Haroun made it on time from Stockholm and clocked the fastest time in the men’s 400m heats with 46.38.

Farah goes for win not WR in Glasgow

Mo Farah has said his main goal in the 3000m at the Glasgow Indoor Grand Prix on Saturday is the victory.

Schippers eyes long jump

Dafne Schippers has said training for the sprints rather than the multi-events is suiting her.

It s my first winter training as a sprinter which is new and I like it. When you do the heptathlon, there s always a feeling that you ve forgotten to do something. Sprinting is easier for the mind,” said Schippers, quoted by the IAAF at the press conference for the Glasgow Indoor Grand Prix.

She also said she is planning to do some long jump competitions this summer.
