A look at some of the top results from the past week including world record-breaking performances by Anita Wlodarczyk and Hannah Cockroft

Kamila Skolimowska Memorial Throws Festival, Cetniewo, Poland, August 1

Anita Wlodarczyk broke her own hammer world record and the 80 metre barrier with her second round throw of 81.08m.

The mark is an improvement of exactly one and a half metres on the 79.58m she threw last year in Berlin. The two-time European champion and 2009 world gold medallist also threw 79.07m and 78.53m in her series.

Wlodarczyk’s fellow Polish thrower Pawel Fajdek won the men’s hammer with 82.07m to defeat Krisztian Pars, while Piotr Malachowski won the men’s discus in a world-leading 68.29m and Tomasz Majewski won the men’s shot, throwing 20.78m

UK CAU & England Athletics Senior AAA Championships and England Athletics Disability Championships, Bedford, August 1/2

Hannah Cockroft clocked a world T34 800m record-breaking time of 2:02.94 when finishing behind T53 athlete Samantha Kinghorn’s 2:00.66.

Serita Solomon, smarting from World Championships GB team omission, won the 100m hurdles in 13.01 after a World Championships standard of 12.98 in her heat.

Ben Reynolds won the 110m hurdles in a Northern Ireland record of 13.48, finishing narrowly ahead of triple world finalist Will Sharman who continued his comeback with a season’s best 13.53.

Former world champion Dai Greene won the 400m hurdles by two and half seconds in 50.26.

Jodie Williams won the 200m in a modest 23.97 after a 23.83 heat.

Sean Safo-Antwi won the 100m in 10.16 as four of the eight finalists failed to start including Richard Kilty, who won his semi-final in 10.20.

Finnish Championships, Pori, July 30-August 2

Antti Ruuskanen defeated former world champion Tero Pitkamaki with a PB throw of 88.98m as five athletes bettered 80 metres in the event.

Kenyan World Championships trials, Nairobi, July 31/August 1

Ferguson Cheruiyot surprised world record-holder David Rudisha to win the 800m in 1:43.60 from Rudisha’s 1:43.89. The quality was high with 10 times inside 1:46 in the semi-finals.

World champion Asbel Kiprop won the 1500m in 3:34.03.

Considering the altitude, the most outstanding performance was Geoffrey Kamworor’s 27:11.89 in the 10,000m.

Eunice Sum won the 800m in 1:59.46, Faith Kipyegon the 1500m in 4:01.85 and Vivian Cheruiyot the 10,000m in 32:58.4. Jairus Birech claimed victory in the steeplechase in 8:19.55.

It wasn’t just the distance events that impressed though as Nicholas Bett won the 400m hurdles in 48.29, Julius Yego won the javelin with 83.10m and Joyce Zakari won the 400m in 51.16.

Mike Nyang’au won a sprint double in a hand-timed 9.9 and 20.48.

Beckum, Germany, August 2

Cuba’s Yarisley Silva won the pole vault with a world-leading 4.91m, which is a Central American and Caribbean record and consolidates her third-place position on the world all-time list.

Eberstadt, Germany, August 2

Derek Drouin won the high jump with 2.37m on countback as Gianmarco Tamberi cleared the same height to break the Italian record.

In the women’s competition, Britain’s double world junior champion Morgan Lake equalled her British junior record by clearing 1.94m.

Memorial Rasschaert, Belgium, August 1

Andy Vernon, who missed out on selection for the GB team for the World Championships, won the 5000m in 13:20.34 ahead of European silver medallist Hayle Ibrahimov. Andrew Butchart set a PB 13:29.39 in third place.

Seren Bundy-Davies won the 400m in 51.88, Adelle Tracey won the 800m in a 2:01.10 PB and Shona Richards won the 400m hurdles in 56.23.

Pan American Junior Championships, Edmonton, Canada, August 2

Cuba’s Yulenmis Aguilar broke the world junior javelin record, throwing the 600g implement 63.86m to better the mark of 63.01m set in 2008.
