Martyn Rooney gets 400m World Champs spot after appealPublished by
European champion now named for both the individual event and 4x400m relay in Beijing, while Andy Vernon and Lennie Waite are among athletes with unsuccessful appealsMartyn Rooney is to represent Great Britain in the 400m at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing following a successful appeal. The European champion had initially only been named as part of the 4x400m relay squad but will now also join his GB team-mates Jarryd Dunn and Rabah Yousif in contesting the individual event. Meanwhile, athletes such as Andy Vernon and Lennie Waite will not be joining Rooney in China after their respective appeals for the 10,000m and 3000m steeplechase were unsuccessful. “So I’ve officially been selected for Great Britain and Northern Ireland in 400m at the IAAF World Championships!” Rooney wrote on his website. “Hopefully it will be my only experience of the appeals process and I can go on and represent GB to the best of my ability.” Rooney is the reigning European champion and had achieved the qualifying mark once but finished third at the trials behind Yousif and Dunn. Two days after the team was announced, with Rooney named for the 4x400m but not the individual event, the 28-year-old ran a season’s best of 45.41 in Stockholm. Also among those to submit an appeal was European 10,000m silver medallist Vernon. UK Athletics performance director Neil Black had said that the 29-year-old’s form had not shown him as a top-eight contender for Beijing or as a future medal prospect and that recent spats with Mo Farah had not been a factor in his non-selection. You can read more on this, including comments from Vernon, in the August 6 edition of AW magazine. Waite, who won the 3000m steeplechase by 14 seconds at the British Championships, also failed in her appeal. The 29-year-old achieved the qualifying standard for Beijing once but the British Athletics selection criteria states that two standards must be set in order to secure automatic selection after a trials top two spot.
