Jamaican sprint star to return to London’s Olympic Stadium on July 24

Usain Bolt has been added to the list of athletes set to appear at the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games later this month, with organisers British Athletics confirming that the Jamaican sprint star is due to contest the 100m.

The 100m and 200m world record-holder last competed individually in the UK at this event in 2013 when he won the 100m in 9.85.

He has recently been receiving injury treatment in Germany after withdrawing from the Paris and Lausanne Diamond League meetings as well as the Jamaican Championships.

Bolt’s participation at the London Diamond League event, which takes place on July 24-25, follows the news that international athletes competing at the Anniversary Games will be exempt from paying income tax.

The 28-year-old – who won three gold medals in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay at London 2012 – said: “London is a special place where I love to compete and I am looking forward to the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games on July 24.

“I have great memories of competing in the Olympic Stadium in the summer of 2012 and in the previous Grand Prix meets in London.

“The British fans are always great and I expect there will also be a lot of Jamaican fans in the stadium. It will be amazing to put on another great show for them under the floodlights on the Friday night.”

Mo Farah was recently announced for the 3000m at the Anniversary Games on the Friday evening, while his fellow Olympic champions Jessica Ennis-Hill and David Rudisha are also among those set to compete at the meeting.

“The chance to see a living legend like Bolt is very rare and we are delighted to be able to welcome him to the reopening of the stadium where he so thrilled us all at the 2012 Games,” commented the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson.

“It is a beginning of a new chapter for the Stadium and there will be many more amazing nights to come – it is wonderful that we are starting in such style.”
