European pentathlon champion due to contest the long jump at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in July

Katarina Johnson-Thompson says she is back in full training and everything is going well as she confirmed her intention to compete at the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games on July 24-25 after her recent withdrawal from the heptathlon at this weekend’s Gotzis Hypo-Meeting.

The European pentathlon champion is set to contest the long jump at the IAAF Diamond League meeting held at London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

The event will see the 22-year-old return to the venue in which she made her Olympic debut in the heptathlon in 2012, finishing 15th at the age of 19. She was also victorious in the long jump at the 2013 Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games held in the Stadium.

“I’m so excited about the Sainsbury s Anniversary Games, it s going to be one of the events of the year,” said Johnson-Thompson.

“The Olympics was my first senior international event and it s such a special stadium for me. It will be amazing to go back to the Stadium and bring back the memories, it s definitely my favourite event of the calendar.”

After claiming her European pentathlon title with a British record 5000 points in Prague in early March, the 2014 world heptathlon No.1 suffered a knee injury which affected her training, leading to her Hypo-Meeting withdrawal. She recovered enough to finish second in the 200m hurdles at the Athletics Weekly Great CityGames Manchester earlier this month but was not in a position to contest the heptathlon in Austria on May 30-31.

Johnson-Thompson has an outdoor long jump personal best of 6.92m and will be using the London Diamond League meet as an opportunity to see where she is at a month out from the IAAF World Championships in Beijing.

“I’m back in full training and everything is going well,” she said. “This will be a great test four weeks out from Beijing and I m doing my favourite event in the long jump.”
