Record-breaking 95-year-old clocks 54.77 to better his own world record at the European Masters Indoor Championships in Poland

Charles Eugster broke his own world M95 200m record at the European Masters Indoor Championships in Torun, Poland, on Friday.

Clocking 54.77, the 95-year-old shaved 0.71 off the record he had set at the British Masters Indoor Championships in Lee Valley earlier this month.

Sharing news of his record on Twitter, Eugster wrote: “New World Record- 54.77 seconds for 200m! Thank you to everyone who has helped me achieve it.”

The 55.48 Eugster ran in London earlier this month had taken more than two seconds off the M95 mark set by American Orville Rogers in 2013.

On Wednesday Eugster claimed his first title of the championships after running 14.56 for 60m, breaking the British record.

Last year Eugster spoke with AW ‘s editor and shared the secrets of his success. Read about them here.

Also among the world record-breakers in Torun is Eugster’s GB team-mate Darren Scott who broke the world M45 200m record with 22.52, leading home a GB 1-2 as he beat Michael Gardiner, who clocked 23.36, to the title.

Ros Tabor has won four W65 golds in Poland, at 400m, 800m, 1500m and 3000m, beating world record-holder Angela Copson in the 1500m on Friday.

Caroline Powell set a European W60 record at 200m with 28.95, while Louise Rudd set a British W40 record at 1500m in winning gold in 4:35.80.

Full results from the six day-long championships can be found here.
