Coach who helped transform GB’s relay success is to depart from UKA, with Stephen Maguire to lead sprint relay programme

Rana Reider, the American coach who has helped to transform GB’s relay success, is to leave his full-time post at British Athletics, with Stephen Maguire leading the British Athletics sprint relay programme from the new year.

Earlier this year Maguire – formerly director of coaching at Scottish Athletics – was appointed as “head of power” for sprints, sprint hurdles and relays at UK Athletics and this latest responsibility is said to mark the final phase of his transition into that full-time role.

Reider, who joined UKA in 2012, is to depart from his post at the British Athletics National Performance Centre in Loughborough, returning to freelance coaching. The American’s coaching group currently includes the likes of Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, Dwain Chambers, Desiree Henry, Richard Kilty and Shara Proctor. He was initially brought in after London 2012 to oversee the sprints, sprint hurdles, horizontal jumps and relays programmes.

During his time at UKA he has been among those to help GB’s relay teams to world, European and Commonwealth medals, most notably helping to transform Britain’s female sprinters to a level which has seen them break the national record twice in 11 days in Zurich first with 42.25 to win European gold and then 42.21 at the Diamond League on the same track. That was after a GB women s 4x100m team failed to even make the London Olympics.

“I am delighted that the original vision for my elite coaching team all based within the National Performance Centre is now finally fully in place,” commented performance director Neil Black.

“The relay process which Rana started and which this summer was delivered in tandem with Stephen, has given both sprint relay squads real belief and a solid technical foundation for future success.”
