Polish thrower sets a world record of 79.58m at ISTAF meeting in Berlin

Anita Wlodarczyk broke the hammer world record at Berlin’s ISTAF meeting on Sunday, launching the implement 79.58m.

The mark adds 16 centimetres to the world record Germany’s Betty Heidler set in Halle in 2011.

An incredible series saw Poland’s European champion also record throws of 75.29m, 78.46m, 79.04m, 78.64m and 77.94m, with her record-breaking throw managed in the second round.

Any of Wlodarczyk’s marks would have been enough for victory in the German capital as Heidler came closest with 75.20m in the second round.

Wlodarczyk also threw what was then a world record of 77.96m in the same stadium when winning the world title back in 2009.

She had come close to Heidler’s record mark just over two weeks before when she threw a 78.76m national record in Zurich when retaining her European title.

“It is a great feeling to finally improve the world record,” she said. “I was aiming for 80 metres and I know I am able to throw it. I felt very confident and my shape is very good this year.

“This stadium brings me luck,” she added. “The atmosphere was amazing and the weather was great.”

Other throws action in Berlin saw Germany’s Christina Schwanitz and David Storl victorious in the shot competitions with best throws of 19.53m and 21.41m respectively. Robert Harting won the discus with 68.21m.

Joining them in victory were the likes of Augustine Kiprono Choge with a 5000m season’s best of 13:06.12 to beat Bernard Lagat with 13:06.68, Pawel Wojciechowski with a best clearance of 5.80m to go joint fourth on the world pole vault rankings this season, Mohammed Aman with a 1:43.52 800m and Kerron Stewart who ran 11.25 for 100m victory.

A number of British athletes were also in action, Tiffany Porter winning the 100m hurdles in 12.64 from Brianna Rollins while Martyn Rooney was just pipped by Botswana’s Isaac Makwala - 45.11 to 45.14 – in the 400m as Conrad Williams finished sixth in 45.90.

Chris Tomlinson placed third with 7.78m in a long jump competition won by Ignisious Gaisah with a season’s best of 8.13m. Will Sharman clocked 13.35 in the 110m hurdles to finish fourth behind winner Orlando Ortega with 13.08, while Richard Kilty ran a 10.49 100m for ninth in a race won by Trinidad and Tobago’s Richard Thompson in 10.15.
