AW takes a look back at some of the highlights of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games

Fans have been treated to some incredible athletics action at the Commonwealth Games over the past seven days.

From marathon magic on the streets of the Scottish city on day one to Usain Bolt busting a move to the sound of The Proclaimers 500 Miles before blasting away to bag his first Commonwealth gold as a part of the Jamaica 4x100m relay team on the final night, it’s been eventful.

With one impressive performance closely followed by another, it’s easy for things to slip the mind, so below you’ll find links to our session-by-session reports, as well as news pieces and blog posts, to help you relive what has been a great Glasgow Games.

Marathon magic

On Sunday July 27, Australia’s Michael Shelley won the men’s marathon as Flomena Cheyech Daniel led a Kenyan one-two in the women’s race. Read more…

At the first evening session of athletics action at the Games, Kenya’s Caleb Ndiku claimed the first track gold with 5000m victory. Read more…

Gold for Greaves and Bailey-Cole as Gemili sprints to silver

On Monday July 28, Dan Greaves won England s first athletics gold of the Games with a 59.21m throw for 1023 points in the F42/44 discus, while Kenya s Hellen Obiri ran a Games 1500m record in the heats. Read more…

Jamaica s Kemar Bailey-Cole clocked 10.00 to take the men’s 100m title from England’s Adam Gemili with 10.10. Nigeria s Blessing Okagbare ran a 10.85 Games record to claim the first of her two Commonwealth sprint titles. Victorious in the women s T11/12 100m, Libby Clegg won Scotland s first athletics gold since Yvonne Murray in 1994. Read more…

Kenya and Jamaica claim cleansweeps

On Tuesday July 29, Olympic champion Greg Rutherford automatically qualified for the long jump final with his first leap. Scotland’s Eilidh Child in the hurdles and David Rudisha in the 800m also cruised through to the next rounds. Read more…

In the evening session, there was a Kenyan cleansweep in a thrilling 10,000m won by Joyce Chepkirui, while Jamaica claimed all the medals in the women’s 400m. Canada s Damian Warner won the decathlon as England’s Ashley Bryant claimed one of five silvers secured by his nation on the third evening of athletics action. Read more…

Gold for Greg, Games record for King Kirani

On Wednesday July 30, Scotland s Lynsey Sharp secured a semi-final spot in the 800m while the favourites all progressed in the men’s 200m. Read more…

Greg Rutherford added the Commonwealth long jump title to his Olympic gold, while Grenada s Kirani James broke the 16-year-old 400m Games record. Shot put star Valerie Adams won her third Commonwealth gold. Read more…

Medals galore for home nation athletes

On Thursday July 31, Blessing Okagbare claimed her second gold of the Games with 200m victory, as Jodie Williams, Bianca Williams and Anyika Onuora made it an England two-three-four. Rasheed Dwyer led a Jamaican cleansweep in the men’s event, while David Weir cruised to T54 1500m victory. Botswana s Nijel Amos defeated Kenya’s world record-holder David Rudisha in an exciting two-lap battle. Read more…

Steve Lewis soars, Sharp secures silver

On Friday August 1, England’s Steve Lewis completed the full set of Commonwealth pole vault medals as he won a jump-off with Luke Cutts. Scotland’s Lynsey Sharp secured 800m silver behind Kenya s world champion Eunice Sum despite having spent the night before the final in hospital on a drip. Uganda s Moses Kipsiro became the first to successfully defend the men’s 10,000m title as Australia s Sally Pearson added Commonwealth 100m hurdles gold to her Olympic crown. Read more…

Relay great final night

On Saturday August 2, England grabbed gold in the men s 4x400m as Usain Bolt performed for the Hampden crowd, dancing on the track before anchoring the Jamaica team home in a 4x100m Games record time. Jo Pavey bagged a brilliant bronze in the women’s 5000m, while Julius Yego became the first Kenyan to win gold in a non-running athletics event at the Games with his victory in the javelin.
