GB 400m hurdler among medallists on penultimate day of World Junior Championships action in Eugene

Shona Richards clocked 56.16 to win world junior 400m hurdles silver on the penultimate day of World Junior Championships action in Eugene, breaking the British junior record in the process.

Her time takes three tenths from the record mark set by the now world indoor relay gold medallist Perri Shakes-Drayton in 2007.

Richards had been level with Shamier Little of the US until the final bend when the American gained the lead to eventually clock 55.66 for gold.

“I ve been training for this all year,” said Richards. “In my head I was thinking ‘come on fight for that place and I completely forgot about the national record. I think as soon as you forget about things like that it s when you get them.”

The GB 4x400m relay teams had more success than their 4x100m team-mates the day before as both got the baton round with strong showings.

A women’s team of Laviai Nielsen, Loren Bleaken, Nikita Campbell-Smith and Sabrina Bakare clocked 3:35.37 for a world junior leading time before USA ran 3:32.73 to win the second heat. The GB men’s team of David Hall, Nick Petrou, Ben Snaith and Elliot Rutter also won their heat with 3:08.61.

The US teams dominated the two 4x100m finals – the men’s team of Jalen Miller, Trayvon Bromell, Kendal Williams and Trentavis Friday clocking 38.70 to miss the world junior record by just four hundredths of a second. The women’s team – featuring Teahna Daniels, Ariana Washington, Jada Martin and Kaylin Whitney – ran 43.46 to claim their victory.

The women’s 3000m steeplechase was won by Bahrain s Ruth Jebet in 9:36.74 to claim her nation’s first gold at this event. Britain’s Amy-Eloise Neale finshed 11th in 10:25.14.

France’s Axel Chapelle claimed pole vault gold thank to his clearance of a world junior-leading 5.55m in a competition which saw seven athletes clear 5.40m and four go on to clear 5.50m. Britain’s Adam Hague was among those still active at 5.40m but the 16-year-old failed his three goes and finished eighth with a personal best of 5.35m, while his team-mate Harry Coppell cleared a best of 5.20m for tenth.

The women’s triple jump was won by Rouguy Diallo of France who leapt 14.44m assisted by a +3.3 m/sec wind. She later backed that up with a legal 14.20m for a national junior record which would also have been enough to win.

Martin Markovic of Croatia threw a national junior record 66.94m in the discus final for gold to also go third on the world junior all-time list.

Britain’s Yasmin Miller ran 13.30 to finish second in her 100m hurdles semi-final, while her team-mate Kyle Langford clocked 1:48.76 to also progress in the men’s 800m.
