A look ahead to the action in store as the Diamond League moves on to Eugene

Galen Rupp, David Rudisha, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Renuad Lavillenie are among the athletes set to star at the Prefontaine Classic this weekend as the event is held for the 40th time and incorporates the third leg of the Diamond League series.

Portland native Rupp is set to contest the final event of Friday’s ‘Distance Night in Eugene’ – the 10,000m. With organisers advising that the Olympic silver medallist has asked for a fast pace, he’ll be targeting his own US 10km track best of 26:48.00. He takes on the likes of Kenya s world bronze medallist Paul Tanui and Bedan Karoki, the Kenyan Olympic fifth-placer.

The women’s discus, women’s long jump and men’s shot put also take place on that first evening of action, with last year’s long jump Diamond League winner, UK record-holder Shara Proctor, among those competing.

Saturday is set to see the long-awaited return of Kenya’s world 800m record-holder Rudisha following knee injury problems as he lines up as part of a high-class field including world indoor and outdoor champion Mohammed Aman of Ethiopia and Botswana’s Olympic silver medallist Nijel Amos. Olympic fourth-placer Duane Solomon of the US is also entered, as is his fellow Olympic finalist Andrew Osagie of Britain.

World 1500m champion Asbel Kiprop is set to star in the final event of the programme, the Bowerman Mile, while the 5000m field includes Ethiopia’s Yenew Alamirew, his compatriot, the world silver medallist Hagos Gebrhiwet, and USA’s Bernard Lagat. Britain’s double world and Olympic champion Mo Farah is the honourary starter for the race.

In the women’s events, Brits Hannah England and Laura Weightman will line up in the 1500m against world champion Abeba Aregawi of Sweden and the woman of the moment in middle-distance terms, recent African 3000m record-setter Hellen Obiri. Another British athlete in action is Eilish McColgan who competes in her first steeplechase of the year. The world champion in that event, Milcah Chemos, will be unlikely to make the same mistake which led to the surprise victory in Shanghai of Emma Coburn, who competes on home soil.

Jamaican sprint star Fraser-Pryce takes on the 200m as all Moscow World Championships medallists are in action. As well as silver medallist Murielle Ahour , Fraser-Pryce faces Nigeria’s world bronze medallist Blessing Okagbare, who is also entered for the long jump the day before, as well as Olympic champ Allyson Felix. Felix’s compatriot Justin Gatlin runs the 100m alongside Jamaicans Nesta Carter and Nickel Ashmead and France s European indoor 60m champion Jimmy Vicaut. The men s 110m hurdles will feature world record-holder Aries Merritt, world champion David Oliver and Olympic decathlon champion Ashton Eaton.

USA’s Olympic silver medallist Brigetta Barrett, Russia’s world champion Svetlana Shkolina and her compatriot, the Olympic champion Anna Chicherova, contest the high jump, as world pole vault record-holder Lavillenie is also back in action.
