Anthony Whiteman and James Thie head the British medal hunt in Budapest

More than 300 British athletes are making the trip to Budapest for the World Masters Indoor Championships from March 25-30, writes Martin Duff.

Anthony Whiteman and James Thie head the British medal hunt in Hungary. Thie, the world indoor 1500m fifth-placer in 2004 who has a best of 3:37.06 outdoors as well as running an indoor 3:57.71 mile, goes in the 800m, 1500m and 3000m in the youngest M35 age group, while double Olympian Whiteman, the first M40 to run an outdoor sub-four-minute mile and is the world M40 800m record- holder at 1:48.28 tackles the same distances.

A clutch of British women have been setting world age group records this winter and all can expect to score heavily. W50 Clare Elms runs in the three middle-distance races and also goes in the half-marathon. She will be up against Fiona Matheson in the 1500m and 3000m. W55 Laura Mahady limits herself to the 400m and 800m, but W65 Angie Copson is down for all events from 400m through to 3000m as well as the cross country.

Caroline Powell set a W60 400m world mark in the British Championships and contests all three W60 sprints, as does W35 Lesley Owusu, who clashes again with Ellena Ruddock in the shorter sprints.

The pole vault sees Irie Hill aiming to improve the W45 world best for the third time this winter, while elsewhere in the jumps and sprints the W60 Carole Filer is down for five events.

Hurdlers Joe Appiah (M40) and M50 Greg Dunson can again expect medals, while in the throws M50 Steve Whyte is top-ranked in shot and hammer.

American W65 Phil Raschker has won more world masters titles indoors and out than anybody else and is down for eight sprint and jumps events and the relays.

Pete Molloy has set British M65 distance records this year, while Paul Freary is the best known Brit in the half-marathon. Britain s walkers are led by M65s Ian Richards and John Hall, both having moved up a group, avoiding M60 Frenchman Patrice Brochot.
